Care & Cleaning Keep Your Counters looking great for years

Wooden Countertop Care & Cleaning

Wooden countertops depending on the finish, require some care and maintenance to keep them looking their best.

  • Polyurethane finished surfaces don’t require any standard maintenance.
  • Our Rubio Monocoat finish typically requires a re-oiling every 1-2 years.
  • A countertop finished with butcher block wax will need wax or mineral oil applied regularly to maintain that deep rich color. Butcher block wax is not a sealer so apply it when the wood starts to look dry.

Wooden Surface Do’s & Don’ts

  • DO NOT use any harsh chemicals to clean your countertops. Mild soap and water is sufficient for most surfaces.
  • DO NOT set any hot pots or pans directly on a wooden surface. Hot dishes directly from a microwave are fine but something like a frying pan directly off the stove is not.
  • DO use a cutting board on your wooden countertop if you don’t want to leave a mark. Cutting directly on a polyurethane finished surface is not recommended but our monocoat and butcher block wax oil finishes can be cut on.
  • DO NOT scrub your wooden countertop with steel wool or other harsh pad like scotch bright pads.
  • DO use your wood countertop hard. It is not a dining room table meant to be fussed over. It is meant to wear and change over time producing a patina that gets better and better.

How to Clean Your Wooden Countertops

When cleaning your countertop, follow these helpful tips:

  • Clean your countertop with a light mixture of soap and water when needed. If you chop raw meat on the surface use a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water as a natural antibacterial.
  • Don’t use products marketed for dusting wooden surfaces, like Endust or Pledge. They contain wax products you don’t want on your wood countertop.

If your countertop is sealed with a polyurethane coating, your maintenance requirements are even lower. We recommend using Simple Green all-purpose cleaner, as it is all-natural and gentle on most materials and surfaces. We don’t recommend the use of bleach or other harsh cleaners.

When to Oil Your Countertop

Unless your countertop comes with a butcher block wax finish do not apply oil or wax to the surface.

For kitchen countertops with sinks in them we recommend Rubio Monocoat 2C oil. It protects the wood from within against water and other typical household liquids while preserving the wood's natural look and texture.

Using Butcher Block Wax

Butcher block surfaces are typically finished with butcher block wax or mineral oil to preserve and protect the lamination between each strip of wood. We recommend applying Howard Butcher Block Conditioner every two months. Howard products are all-natural and combine the power of food-grade mineral oil, beeswax, carnauba wax, and other ingredients into a product that is specifically designed for these types of wooden countertops.
