Wood countertop design options

Wood countertop options can overwhelm people at first glance. Wood species, thickness, cons truction styles, edge profiles, finish, textures, knife slots or no knife slots! Let's take it one piece at a time and have some fun.

There are no boards wide enough to produce a wood countertop so they have to be glued together to produce the desired width. At J. Aaron, LLC we offer two construction styles, plank style and edge grain. Along with the two construction styles we offer breadboard ends to add a vintage farmhouse look and built up edges to add the appearance of increased thickness. Read all about them below.

  • Breadboard Ends
Breadboard ends are boards attached to the end of a wood panel via tenons. It’s an old fashion way of making table tops and works just as well for kitchen island tops too.

  • Stains
Custom stains are available for all of our wood countertops. All we need is a sample of the desired color. A cabinet door or piece of flooring is perfect. The process usually takes about two weeks so plan ahead if possible.

Surface Textures

  • Distressing
Distressing is available for all the woods and adds years of character to any surface. We don’t have specific levels of distressing but if you want heavy ask for heavy or if you simply want some warn edges we can do that too.

  • Hand Scraping
Hand scraping makes for a surface full of texture and charm. Though there is texture the countertop is easy to clean and care for. We highly recommend the satin polyurethane sealer on these tops as it helps smooth the surface.

  • Drain Channels
A great area to place freshly hand washed dishes so they can air dry. The surface remains flat but we cut angled channels to allow the water to drain into the sink bowl.
  • Trivets
Stainless steel set down rods act as a trivet by keeping hot pots and pans off the wood surface. They rest in grooves and easily lift out for cleaning. Perfect for areas next to a range or oven.
  • Knife Slots
A great addition to countertops designed to be cutting surfaces. The size, layout and number of slots are your choice. Just be sure to design some space in the cabinets for the blades to hang.

Faux Live Edge

Our faux live edges are applied by one of our skilled craftsmen to look very similar to a true live edge slab. The reason we craft them in-house vs. sourcing live edge slabs is the inconsistency we've seen in availability and quality of the slabs. By crafting the faux edge we can put it on any wood, eliminate the days or weeks long process of sourcing the "right" slab and maintain quality.

Wood Countertop Sealer Options

There are two sealer options and one food-grade finish available for our wood countertops. Both sealers do a great job of sealing the wood but in different ways and each with a different look and texture. Our food-grade finish is ideal for surfaces that will be regularly used for chopping. Learn all about it by visiting our wood countertop sealers page.

We also have a blog post on the subject.

Wood Countertop Edge Profiles

All countertops have visible edges and we offer several choices for you, the designer, to pick from. Square and simple, large and ornate or just something to add a little detail.

  • Steel reinforcement

Steel reinforcement can be under-routed into the bottom of all of our countertops (1-1/2" thick min. thickness required). Perfect for large overhangs on kitchen island tops where brackets are not desired.

2" x 1" "U" channel steel bars add a tremendous amount of support and sit flush with the bottom of the countertop for easy installation.

We offer solid tops up to 5 1/2″ thick and built up tops that give a thicker appearance but at a much-reduced price point.

Our standard wood countertops are 1-5/8" thick. That's about 3/8" thicker than most stone slabs. If you're looking for something else our fully custom line is available in a multitude of thickness options.

There really isn't a limit on the width, just the ability to get it on a truck or in your home. Length on our standard countertop line maxes out at 145" without a seam. If a top is longer than 145" we will work with you to design a nice way to seam the two tops together even adding interest to the design. We've done giant dovetail joints, "S" curve joints, angled joints and more. If a seam just isn't going to work our fully custom line can go much longer. Typically 16' is approximately the maximum but all that can be discussed during the design stage.

That's it for the core wood countertop options. Now that's done you can start thinking about extra features like textures, custom colors and in-countertop options. Have fun and let us know if you need any help.
