What Is a Butcher Block?

The term “butcher block” goes back hundreds of years. Back in the day, butchers were using thick rounds cut from tree trunks as the surface for performing their cutting and chopping. While these rounds were easy to manufacture and readily available, they were prone to splitting in a short period of time, particularly with heavy swings needed in cleaving cuts. Instead, butchers discovered that gluing together cut strips of hardwood, such as maple, made for a much more durable and longer-lasting surface. In fact, some old butcher blocks from the early 1900s are still around.

Today, butcher blocks aren’t used for their traditional purpose nearly as often, but their unique look and feel is a revered symbol of timeless beauty. Every butcher block has its own little details and quirks giving it character and charm. With different woods, finishes, care and use, every block evolves over time with a natural living patina.

We Offer a Variety of Butcher Block Options to Fit Your Needs

Butcher block projects can be complex, so we offer a variety of ways to approach each project in order to ensure that the fit and finish for your new countertops are perfect.

We provide butcher block countertops in four levels of completion:

  • Fully-finished: We complete all cutouts on your countertops, finish them, and seal them meaning all you have to do when they arrive is install them.
  • Unfinished: We cut your countertops to size with all cutouts completed and prep them for finish. Ideal for a customer wanting to match the wood to something very specific already in the space.
  • DIY: Much like our unfinished option but in DIY you do the final finish sanding and finishing.
  • Blank slabs: These are premium quality countertop slabs sanded to 180 grit and ready to make into whatever you need them to be. An ideal choice for cabinet shops and other countertop shops wanting to provide high quality products to their customers but without the equipment, time or desire to produce their own slab.
